Jute Fabrics

Jute fabric is made from stretched strong, raw bast fibers. After cotton, jute is the most used natural fiber. The mechanical stretching of jute to jute thread and jute fabric originated in Scotland in the early 18th century. In the past, jute bags were mainly used in agriculture because it is biodegradable. In the Netherlands and Belgium, jute fabric is of course best known for the bag of Sinterklaas.

Today jute is a very hip and popular product. It is environmentally friendly and extremely suitable as decoration or adornment. A lot of jute is also currently used in the interior, for example by means of jute curtains, jute cushions, jute rugs and jute decorations.

Jute – although you might not realize it – is actually one of the most common fabrics around, only second to cotton! With that in mind, do you actually know where jute fabric comes from? As it turns out, jute fabric is a common fabric most often used for home goods and homewares.

Jute is the name of the plant that this fabric is derived from, but you might know it as “burlap.” Essentially, jute fabric is a tough, durable, and rough fabric that is most commonly found in products like carpets, window treatments, rugs, and even furniture covers. Likewise, “hessian” cloth, which is another, lighter form of jute fabric, is often used to make what you’d consider “burlap” bags and sacks.

As a natural fiber, jute is quite textured. If you’re familiar with a jute rope, jute furniture, or jute rugs, then you likely already know what to expect.

What Is Jute Used For?

As mentioned earlier, jute fabric is commonly found in a number of household furnishings. In addition to that, jute has also become a rather trendy DIY craft material that people use to create a wide range of fun home crafts and projects. From DIY drink coasters, to accent wraps for home vases, jute is always a fun material to work with because it brings a unique, rustic element into your design aesthetic.

Let’s also not forget, jute is a relatively sustainable fabric because it’s so easy to produce. Not only that, but the fibers produced by jute plants are 100% biodegradable too.

If you want to use burlap for decoration in your home, consider combining it with organza or tulle. These combinations provide a nice look. If you wash jute fabric first, the fabric will fall a lot smoother. This also ensures that the fabric less dust / fluff. Always make sure to wash burlap before you start working on this fabric. As a result of washing, the fabric can still shrink.
